Gaining skills in knowledge exchange and mobilization (KxM) can help you increase the impact of your research.

KxM Research to Impact Foundations Course is a self-paced, online course designed for members of the UBC community — including faculty, post-doctoral fellows, graduate students, and researchers — whose research aims to create social impact through informing practice and policy and/or expanding public conversation.

Course format:

  • A self-paced, online course hosted on Canvas. 

  • Five learning modules with interactive activities, videos, readings, and case studies. 

  • Additional resources to tailor learning to your research needs.

Course learning outcomes: 

By the end of this course, learners will be able to:

  • Define KxM practices and explain their role in research impact
  • Apply appropriate frameworks and approaches to KxM
  • Design effective dissemination strategies for diverse knowledge users
  • Build ethical research partnerships using inclusive engagement practices
  • Create a comprehensive KxM plan, incorporating evaluation and grant requirements

Who should take this course?

This course is ideal for:
✅ UBC faculty, post-doctoral fellows, grad students and staff doing research aimed at informing practice, policy and dialogue for social, cultural, health, environmental, or economic impact. 

✅ Learners who are currently engaged in research with non-academic partners (community, government, industry) or have a desire to do partnered research. 

✅ You are currently doing research, or you are applying for a research grant.   

This course may not be suitable if:
❌ Your KxM skills and knowledge are already at an advanced level
❌ Your research is strictly focused on commercialization and technology transfer (for commercialization support, please contact the UBC University-Industry Liaison Office)
