Partnering in Research: Conference Agenda

We’re excited to welcome you to UBC’s first Partnering in Research conference! Please note, event planning is still in progress. The agenda and speaker list will be updated on an ongoing basis. Registered participants will receive an email update with the list of speakers and sessions.

This gathering is taking place on the stolen and unceded lands of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) peoples who are the original inhabitants of the unceded land which is now known as the city of Vancouver.

Talk title: Meaningfully Engaging in Research: Advancing the Science and Practice of Research Partnerships

Morning sessions will center around discussions about the shared principles and practices that guide us in building equitable and inclusive research partnerships. Sessions will focus on various topics, including: 

  • Starting in a good way for Indigenous-led research
  • Engaging with equity-deserving and over-researched communities
  • Building relationships through shared knowledge and experience
  • Asset-based approaches that build on existing skills, knowledges 
  • Navigating overlapping, complex relationships

      Talk title: Community Assets, Reciprocity, and Other Ideas We Don’t Really Believe

      Moderator: Dr. Andrea Bundon (Assistant Professor, UBC School of Kinesiology)


      Panel participants: 

      • Theresa Morris (Binche Keyoh Bu Society) in partnership with Onyx Sloan Morgan (UBC Faculty of Irving K. Barber, Arts and Social Science) Their project, "Alhgoh 'uts'ut'en: We all work together," is focused on bringing all members of Binche together to discuss priorities for the keyoh that embolden Binche self-determination for generations to come despite the lasting legacy of extraction.
      • Geoff Sing (BC Brain Injury Association), Jasleen Grewal (PhD student) in partnership with Julia Schmidt (UBC Faculty of Medicine)  Their project, "Creating a unified community and research agenda to support people with brain injury," is developing a consensus on the priorities of people with brain injury, mental health issues, and addiction to ensure that researchers and the community work in tandem to meet their needs.

      Afternoon sessions will focus on processes and practices that research teams can integrate over the course of their collaboration. Topics include:

      • Community-based research ethics and community protocols
      • Rethinking the tools of dissemination and knowledge mobilization 
      • Influencing policy and public decision-makers
      • Funding and resources for reciprocal research partnerships

      closing reflections

      Three invited witnesses will share their reflections on what they heard during the day and what’s next for our growing community of academic and community-based collaborators.
