This workshop was part of the University of British Columbia’s Partnering in Research (PiR) professional development workshop series, designed for UBC researchers, students, and staff involved in partnered research, as well as community partners collaborating with UBC for community-centred change. PiR is a collaborative venture between the Knowledge Exchange Unit and Indigenous Research Support Initiative of UBC’s Vice President Research and Innovation, the Office of Community Engagement under the Vice President External Relations, and the Centre for Asian Canadian Research and Engagement in the Faculty of Arts.
Equitable and timely compensation can be an essential part of building strong collaborative relationships with community partners. Without it, trust and respect can be damaged, and partners may feel undervalued and unappreciated.
Despite its significance, the complexity of financial systems at UBC can make processing these payments daunting, shaking the confidence of even experienced administrators and researchers.
In this Partnering in Research workshop, hosted on November 7, 2024, Ryan Brown, UBC Community Engagement, and Sam Filipenko, UBC Indigenous Research Support Initiative, correct some common misconceptions about UBC’s financial system and share practical tips for navigating the payment systems, managing typical challenges, and processing timely, equitable compensation that can help to strengthen and sustain community-university relationships.
